Electrician Demand & Pay in the UK

Demand outlook: Very High — JIB-qualified electricians are in severe shortage across the UK. Major commercial fit-out, residential, and infrastructure programmes all compete for the same qualified pool.

Pay for electricians in the UK typically ranges from £20 to £30 per hour. Rates vary by location — London and South East markets consistently command a premium over regional rates. Experience, card type, and project sector also affect earnings.

How to qualify

To work as a qualified electrician on UK construction sites, you need NVQ Level 3 Electrotechnical Technology (City & Guilds 2357 or equivalent) and the AM2 practical assessment, which together qualify you for a JIB (ECS) Gold Card. Most electricians complete a JIB apprenticeship or a college-based route combining classroom learning with work placement. The JIB Apprenticeship is typically three to four years.

Career progression

JIB electricians can progress to working supervisor, electrical foreman, M&E site supervisor, M&E project manager, or electrical contracts manager. Self-employment on a CIS basis is very common and day rates for experienced electricians are among the best in the trades. Some electricians move into electrical design, estimating, or project management roles.
